You have chosen to self-assess
The Document Quality Evaluator can be applied by AI, or you can conduct the evaluation yourself. You have chosen to conduct the evaluation yourself.
What this is

The purpose

Most documents get evaluated informally. Someone reads them, forms a view, and sends feedback. What that process rarely produces is a consistent, repeatable assessment that separates what is genuinely strong from what merely looks polished.

This tool provides that structure. It walks you through eight dimensions of quality, asks you to score the document you are looking at, and produces a record of your evaluation. The framework does the framing; you bring the judgement.

All evidence is drawn from the document itself. Neither the development conversation nor any knowledge of how the document was produced is required.

Before you start

What to have ready

You will need the document you want to evaluate. That is the only essential input.

The seven opening questions establish the evaluation parameters: your relationship to the document, whether AI involvement is known, the document's type and stage, and what context, if any, is available beyond the document itself.

If you are evaluating as an independent assessor with no context, simply note that. The framework adjusts accordingly. The evaluation takes around fifteen to twenty minutes for a full review.

How it works

The process

Begin with the seven opening questions. Your answers calibrate how the framework is applied and are recorded in the evaluation report.

The framework then presents eight dimensions. For each one, select the band that best describes what you find in the document. A notes field is available for each dimension if you want to capture your thinking.

The AI Voice measure comes last. How it applies depends on your answer to Question 2 — whether AI involvement is known, suspected, or unknown. Work through all dimensions in order.

Scoring

The scale

Each dimension is scored across five bands.

Insufficient0 — 2
Partial3 — 4
Adequate5 — 6
Capable7 — 8
Exemplary9 — 10

Adequate means the document passed a minimum threshold and nothing more. Capable is genuinely strong. Exemplary means nothing more could reasonably be asked of the document at this standard. Score what you actually find, not what you were hoping for.

The output

What you get

At the end, you can download a structured PDF of your evaluation. It records your opening question answers, your scores, your notes, and a summary, formatted for reference or sharing.

The report declares the operating mode used — inference or informed — so that any reader of the report understands the evidential basis for every score.

Step 1
Opening questions

Answer all seven questions before scoring. Your answers calibrate the evaluation and are recorded in the report.

Step 2
Eight dimensions

Work through each dimension in order. Select the band that best describes what you find in the document. Add notes if they would be useful to you later.

Dimension 1 of 8
Fit to Context
Does the document communicate its own purpose, audience, and constraints, and then consistently serve them?
Dimension 2 of 8
Evidence and Grounding
Are claims supported by evidence? Are specific assertions appropriately qualified where verification is not demonstrated?
Dimension 3 of 8
Analytical Depth
Given what this document appears to set out to do, does it contain the level of analytical work that purpose requires?
Dimension 4 of 8
Purposeful Structure
Does the structure serve the reader, guiding them efficiently toward understanding or decision, or does it impose form without function?
Dimension 5 of 8
Appropriate Register
Is the document's voice, formality, and language level consistent, coherent, and appropriate to its implied audience?
Dimension 6 of 8
Critical Integrity
Does the document say what its evidence actually supports? Are claims proportionate, uncertainty acknowledged, and conclusions honestly drawn?
Dimension 7 of 8
Internal Consistency
Does the document hold together as a coherent whole? Are claims consistent across sections, and does the conclusion follow from the argument made?
Dimension 8 of 8
Completeness against Evident Purpose
Does the document actually do what it sets out to do? Assessed against the purpose the document reveals about itself, does it arrive where it should?

Step 3
AI Voice

How this measure applies depends on your answer to Q2. Scoring applies when AI involvement is known. Detection and characterisation applies when AI involvement is suspected or unknown.

Holistic Measure — Quality Assessment
AI Voice
Is AI's contribution well-integrated, proportionate, and additive — or does it dominate, distort, or displace genuine human thinking?
For this measure, higher is better. A score of 9-10 means AI is entirely subsumed into the human voice. A score of 0-2 means AI dominates throughout.

Step 4
Overall summary

In your own words, what are the two or three most significant things you found? What single change would most improve the document?

Your summary

Draw on your dimensional scores and notes. You do not need to repeat every detail, just the things that matter most.
